Use the Downtime to Plan the Next Big Trip

There is a version of trip planning that is just daydreaming at a map. That is fine. But the version that actually produces a great trip involves a bit more structure.

Start with the route. Identify the key destinations, then work out what connects them. Australia has a lot of sealed road that does not show up in the obvious routes, roads that are quieter, more interesting, and often just as fast.

Work out your power requirements early. If you are planning to free-camp for extended periods, know what your solar and battery setup can sustain. This shapes everything from how long you can stay somewhere to what appliances you can run.

Water and fuel are the other two variables that catch people out. Know the distances between reliable refuel points on your planned route. Build in margin.

Finally, think about what you actually want to do when you get there. The best trips are not just drives. They are built around a reason to be in each place. That might be fishing, hiking, photography, or simply sitting still somewhere genuinely remote. Plan around the thing you are going there to do, and the route tends to sort itself out.
