No, you do not need one. The roads are sealed all the way to Mundiville, and the campground itself is suitable for 2WD vehicles including motorhomes. That said, we would still recommend a 4x4 or the Sprinter AWD if you have the choice. The campground is unsealed, and outback dirt turns greasy fast after rain.

Is a 4x4 worth it for this trip?

In our view, yes. You can absolutely do the Bash in a 2WD, and plenty of owners have. But the campground and the tracks around Silverton and the lookout are unsealed, and a shower of rain changes them completely. A 4x4 or the Sprinter AWD means you get in, get parked and get out on your own schedule instead of waiting for the ground to dry. It is the difference between a trip that works and a trip that depends on the weather.

Where is the Mundi Mundi Bash held?

On the Mundi Mundi Plains at Belmont Station, about 35km from Broken Hill and 9km north of Silverton, NSW.

Can I take a motorhome or caravan?

Yes. BYO camping is the whole point, motorhomes, caravans and tents are all welcome on site.

Is there phone reception at the festival?

No. Download the Bash app before you leave Broken Hill, that's your main source of on-site information.

How far is the drive from Sydney?

Around 1,150km via Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Cobar and Wilcannia. Worth splitting over two or three days rather than driving it straight.

Where do I get fuel near the festival?

Broken Hill is the last fuel stop, an 80km round trip from Mundiville. Fill up before you head out to Silverton.

Can I day trip instead of camping?

Yes. Day Parking at Mundiville runs 8am to 10pm on concert days, or you can take the transfer bus from Broken Hill.

The Mundi Mundi Bash is a BYO camping outback music festival held on the Mundi Mundi Plains north of Broken Hill, with proceeds supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service. For three days in August a stretch of red dirt turns into a temporary town called Mundiville, and thousands of people drive a very long way to be part of it.

It is a trip a lot of our owners already know well. Plenty of Suncamper owners have made the run out to Mundiville over the years, and plenty more have given us the heads up that they are heading out this year. If you are going, you will not be short of Suncampers parked around you.

Here is the good news for anyone weighing up the drive: you do not need a 4x4. The roads are sealed the whole way to the festival, and the campground itself is set up for 2WD vehicles, motorhomes and caravans included. If you can drive to Broken Hill, you can get to Mundiville. Would we take a 4x4 or the Sprinter AWD if we had the choice? Every time. More on why further down.

Stage 1: Thornleigh to Dubbo

Leave the factory and head west over the Blue Mountains via the Great Western Highway, through Bathurst and Orange, down into the Central West for the first overnight stop in Dubbo. A solid but manageable first day.

Local knowledge: Fill up in Dubbo. It's the last town with a genuinely wide choice of fuel stops before the outback proper starts.

Our Advice

Why We'd Take the 4x4

You do not need a 4x4 to get to the Mundi Mundi Bash. We want to be straight about that, because plenty of owners have done it in a 2WD and had a brilliant time. But if you are choosing between builds, or you already have the option, this is the trip where four driven wheels quietly pay for themselves.

Rain Changes Everything

The drive in is sealed, so getting to Broken Hill is never the problem. The campground is not. Outback dirt sheds water badly, and a single decent shower turns a firm surface greasy within minutes. In a 4x4 or the Sprinter AWD you drive on, park up and drive off again whenever you like. In a 2WD you wait for it to dry.

Getting Parked Where You Want

Campsites at Mundiville sit on open ground, and the good spots are not always the flattest or the firmest. All-wheel drive gives you the confidence to back into the site you actually want rather than the one closest to the hard-packed track.

Everything Around Silverton

The Bash is three days. Most owners make a week of it. The lookouts, the reservoir and the tracks around Silverton and the Barrier Ranges are where that extra time goes, and almost all of it is unsealed. A 4x4 opens up the part of the trip that is not the festival.

It Is Not Just This Trip

Owners who go 4x4 for the Bash rarely stop there. The same van that gets you onto the Mundi Mundi Plains without a second thought is the one that gets you into the places most motorhomes turn around at. If you are choosing a build now, this is the option worth stretching for.

The short version: go if you can only go in a 2WD. But if you have the choice, take the 4x4 or the Sprinter AWD. A bit of rain out there and you will be very glad you did.
