TRAVEL GUIDE
Sydney to the TipThe Suncamper Cape York Guide
4,000 kilometres. Six stages. One Sherwood.
Every year a handful of Suncamper owners do something most people only dream about. They point their Sherwood north from our Thornleigh factory and drive until they run out of continent. Sydney to Pajinka, the northernmost point of Australia. Around 4,000 kilometres. It is one of the great Australian road trips, and it is not for standard motorhomes. The Cape will test your vehicle, your planning, and your patience. But get it right, and it is the kind of trip that changes how you think about travel.
This guide is built from the experience of owners who have done it. We have broken the journey into six stages, listed the campgrounds worth stopping at, given you the practical survival tips, and at the end, told you which Sherwood model suits which kind of trip. Whether you are planning to leave in the next six months or just starting to think about it, this is the place to start.

Stage 1: Sydney to Cairns, The Climb North
Leave the factory in Thornleigh and head north. Skip the Pacific Highway wherever you can. Thunderbolts Way and Waterfall Way through the ranges are worth the extra distance. Cross into Queensland and push through to Cairns, your last major city before the Cape begins.
Local knowledge: Stock up in Cairns. Fresh produce, fuel, and any last-minute spare parts.

Where to Drop Anchor
Cape York rewards owners who plan their stops. These are the campgrounds our owners come back raving about.

4x4 Survival Tips
These are the things that catch first-timers out.
Air Down Everywhere
Drop your tyre pressures to around 25-28 PSI on the dirt, and lower for soft sand. It extends the vehicle's footprint for traction and absorbs corrugations before they reach your cabinetry. Your fridge and overhead lockers will thank you.
Leave Cooktown Full
Full fuel, full water, full fridge. The distances between reliable refuel points on the PDR are significant. Know them before you leave Cooktown and build in a margin.
Dust is Unavoidable. Manage It.
When a road train passes on the PDR, pull over, stop, and switch your headlights on. The dust cloud will blind you completely for 15 to 20 seconds. Do not try to drive through it.
Crocodile Sense
Assume every body of water north of Lakeland contains a saltwater crocodile unless it is explicitly marked as safe. Eliot Falls and Fruit Bat Falls are marked. Everything else is not. This is not a precaution, it is a fact.
Know Your Vehicle Before You Leave
Cape York is not the place to discover that you do not know how to change a tyre, operate your winch, or reset your inverter. Spend an afternoon at the factory or at a 4x4 training day before you go north.
