Where Are You Planning Your Winter Trip?
We did not set out with a rigid itinerary. We knew winter was coming, the coast would cool down, and the inland would be sitting at the kind of temperatures that make long days outside genuinely comfortable. Clear skies, mild days, empty roads. We loaded up and pointed the motorhome west.
The trip to Alice Springs from Sydney covers a lot of different country. The further you get from the coast, the more the landscape opens up. By the time you are into outback NSW and South Australia, there is a quality of light and silence that is hard to find anywhere else in the world.
Winter is genuinely the best time to travel inland Australia. The heat that makes the same routes difficult in summer is gone. The wildlife is more active. The national parks that bake in January are pleasant and uncrowded in July.
If you are sitting on a winter trip and have not committed to it yet, the window is shorter than it feels. Where are you planning to go?
