The Australian RV Industry Is Changing. Here Is Where We Stand.
The Australian RV and caravan industry is in the middle of a significant correction. High-volume builders who expanded aggressively through the COVID years are now facing the consequences of that overreach, and the ripple effects are being felt across manufacturers, supply chains, and dealer networks right across the country.
We think our customers deserve a straight answer about what is happening, and where Suncamper fits in it.
What triggered this
The pandemic created an artificial spike in demand that the industry could not sustain. Builders scaled up fast, took on debt, and built their models around volume. When the market normalised, those margins collapsed. Several well-known names have entered administration or wound up entirely in the past twelve months.
Global disruption made it worse. Shipping route closures in the Middle East at the start of the year pushed freight costs sharply higher and delayed materials for builders across the country. For manufacturers already running thin, that was a serious additional pressure.
“The market that inflated through COVID is contracting hard. Businesses built on thin margins and fast turnover are the ones feeling it most.”
The travel appetite has not gone away
Here is the part that often gets lost in the industry noise: Australians have not stopped wanting to travel. Demand for getting out there and seeing this country is as strong as it has ever been. What has changed is how buyers are approaching the purchase. They are taking longer, doing more research, and being far more selective about who they buy from.
That shift suits us.
Where Suncamper stands
We have been building motorhomes for 49 years. We have been through recessions, supply shocks, and market corrections before. The reason we are still here is straightforward: we do not chase volume, and we do not compete on price with products that are not in our category.
Our production is focused and measured. Orders are coming through steadily. We are not over-extended.
We build premium motorhomes for Australians who want to travel properly. That is the whole brief. It has not changed, and it is not changing.
“The market is selecting for quality right now. That suits us.”
What we are excited about
Genuinely, quite a lot. We are growing the Suncamper group of brands, investing in the range, and seeing real demand from buyers who have done their homework and know exactly what they are looking for.
The correction happening in the broader industry is difficult for a lot of people, and we do not minimise that. But for a business built the way ours is, it is also a moment of clarity. The path we have always been on is the right one.
Our goal has not changed in nearly five decades: to keep helping Australians get out there and enjoy this country. That is what we are here for.
